What is a hair weave?

A hair weave is a very general term used to describe human or artificial hair used to alter one's natural hair appearance by adding additional hair to one's head. This is carried out by braided/cornrowing your natural hair, then attaching hair extensions by sowing the wepts horizontally to each corn row (technically known as a track), working your way up from the bottom of your haid.

Below is an example of how to corn row hair:

Step by step instructions of how to do a hair weave:

1.      Ensure hair is washed and brushed
2.      Section hair for weave; do this by taking the hair that is in front of your ears as well as the hair above the crown of your head and place this into a hair elastic
3.      This will ensure that the weave is covered adequately
4.      Spray the hair that is left out of the elastic with hair spray in order to make the hair easier to control
5.      Part the top of the hair left out by using a comb in order to start the first braid
6.      Secure the remaining hair underneath with a hair elastic; this hair will be added to the weave later
7.      Begin braiding the first section of hair horizontally
8.      Once the first section is braided part another section of hair underneath in order to continue with the braid (this may be tricky keeping the braid you have completed from coming undone)
9.      To ensure this doesn’t happen plait the braid to the end so it is secure
10.  Once you have sectioned the second part of hair, remove the plait but keep the braid in tact
11.  Then continue the braid into the next section by going back the opposite direction
12.  Continue this method until you have approximately 6/7 braids

13.  Ensure that you leave a slight section of hair out below the braid (on your neck) as this will enable the hair to be put up into a high ponytail without the weave being visible
14.   In order to secure the weave, plait the end of the last braid

     Finalising the braids;
1.      Once the weave is complete, thread the cotton through the needle
2.      You then need to sow the plait that should be dangling from your hair onto the braid
3.      Do this by threading the needle through the plait then through the braid as if you are attaching a sequin to a shirt
4.      Continue with this until the plait is no longer dangling from the head.
5.      The hair should now look figure 1
6.      Once the hair is fully braided it is then time to start attaching the hair extensions

Attaching the hair extensions;

7.      Remove extensions from there packaging
8.      Measure your extensions to each braid to ensure there is enough hair and the hair extensions will cover each braid adequately
9.      Once you have measured the extensions it is now time to start sowing
10.  Begin with the bottom braid nearest your neck
11.  Check the extension wefts to ensure that the thickest part is facing the braid
12.  Now threat the needle through the extension weft and then through the braid shown in Figure 2.

13.  Bring the needle out through the top of the braid, so you are securing the hair.
14.  Continue to do this until you reach the end of the braid, and cut off any remaining hair that is attached
15.  Continue with this method on every braid and ensure each braid is covered entirely by hair.
16.  Once the pack of hair extensions have been sown in, the hair above the crown of your head can be released
17.  This should cover the top braid and the weave should be invisible
18.  You can now straighten the top of your hair in order to blend with the hair extensions and either layer the extensions yourself (if you are trained of course) or go to a qualified hair dressers
19.  This will create a more natural look and blend the extensions
20.  The finalised weave (after some practise) should look like this

Tips and tricks:
·         It is a wise idea to have someone with you to ensure that your sections are straight and neat
·         Alternatively look in a mirror and hold another mirror behind your head in order to see
·         Use a bend needle as it is less likely to prick your finger- these can be found in superstores such as Tesco or ASDA.
·         Hair weaves last approximately 3 weeks, but the tighter the braids the longer it will last
·         Avoid washing your hair in the shower as you do not want the braids to get wet; this will loosen them
·         Wash hair over the sink with your head held forward
·         To remove the weave just cut the cotton by using scissors or a sharp knife and avoid your natural hair
